maplebrown is the brainchild of Catherine Maple-Brown, an Australian designer based in Sydney, who launched her label at the 2005 Mercedes Australian Fashion Week. She was one of five students selected to show their collection in a parade and a stand at the Source.

The 2005 launch of maplebrown was the culmination of a long journey for Catherine Maple-Brown. This journey began in September 1995 when Catherine left Australia to study art history at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, USA. In her holidays Catherine lived in New York, completing an internship with Yeohlee Teng. Yeohlee’s trademark architectural design combined with functionalism had a profound impact on Catherine, something which is evident in her designs today.

During Catherine’s 3rd year at Brown University she travelled to Florence, Italy, where she lived for 12 months, studying fashion illustration at the Academia Italiana. Florence has never escaped Catherine's soul- indeed she often marvels at the Italian sense of effortless style and design.

After completing her degree, Catherine then headed to Melbourne for 12 months where she worked in marketing and PR for the label Feathers. While Catherine places great value on her time at Feathers, design was always her passion. Soon she returned home and enrolled at the Sydney Institute of Fashion Design, where she completed her Advanced Diploma at the end of 2004.

Catherine’s varied background easily makes her one of the most interesting fashion designers in Australia. With such a vast divergence of influences from all over the world, Catherine has developed into a truly unique designer - a designer of choice for the modern, confident, intelligent woman.
